Karmelo Anthony Sentenced to 35 Years in Prison in Fatal Stabbing of Texas Teen Austin Metcalf

A Texas jury has found Karmelo Anthony guilty of murder and sentenced him to 35 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf during a high school track meet in Frisco, Texas. The verdict concludes one of the state's most closely watched criminal trials, which drew national attention because of the ages of those involved and the competing legal arguments over whether Anthony acted in self-defense.

The fatal incident occurred in April 2025 during a rain delay at a track meet, when students from different schools sought shelter under team tents. According to testimony presented during the trial, an argument developed after Anthony was asked to leave a tent reserved for another school's athletes. The confrontation escalated, ending with Anthony stabbing Metcalf once in the chest. Metcalf later died from his injuries.

During the trial, prosecutors argued that Anthony's use of deadly force was unjustified and that witness testimony showed he was the aggressor. Defense attorneys maintained that Anthony feared for his safety and acted in self-defense. After hearing testimony from numerous witnesses and reviewing the evidence, jurors rejected the self-defense claim and returned a guilty verdict for murder.

In the sentencing phase, the jury also rejected the defense's argument that the crime occurred under "sudden passion," a finding that could have reduced the sentencing range under Texas law. Instead, jurors imposed a 35-year prison sentence. Because Anthony was 17 years old at the time of the offense, he could not receive the death penalty under U.S. law.

The courtroom was emotional as members of Austin Metcalf's family delivered victim impact statements describing the profound loss they have experienced. Anthony's mother also addressed the court, asking jurors for mercy and expressing that her son was remorseful. Anthony himself did not testify during the trial.

The case attracted widespread public attention, fueled in part by extensive social media discussion and misinformation. Law enforcement officials and news organizations repeatedly urged the public to rely on verified court proceedings rather than unconfirmed online claims.

Anthony's legal team has indicated that they intend to appeal the conviction. Under Texas law, he may become eligible for parole after serving the required portion of his sentence, although eligibility does not guarantee release.
