Part 2
Adrian's smile never reached his eyes.
"Did I?" Claire asked, her voice calm despite the pounding in her chest.
He stepped closer, carrying a bottle of water. "The nurse said your blood pressure crashed. You should rest."
Claire accepted the bottle but never broke eye contact. "That's kind of you."
He relaxed, mistaking her composure for confusion.
Good.
The text she'd sent less than a minute earlier had already activated a series of instructions her attorney had prepared months before. Every executive account required dual authorization. Every attempt to transfer company ownership would now be frozen pending an independent investigation. Most importantly, security would receive an alert to preserve all surveillance footage from headquarters.
"What time is it?" Claire asked.
"Almost six."
"So the board meeting has already started."
Adrian hesitated for a fraction of a second.
"They postponed it," he lied.
Claire nodded as if she believed him.
"I'd like to go home," she said.
"Of course."
He helped her to her feet, careful not to appear too eager. As they walked down the hallway, Claire noticed the receptionist avoiding her gaze. Two security guards stood near the elevator, speaking quietly into their radios.
Interesting.
Someone had already begun moving.
The elevator doors opened.
When they reached the executive floor, Adrian suddenly stopped.
"I forgot my phone," he said. "Wait here."
As soon as he disappeared around the corner, Claire slipped into the empty conference room beside the elevator.
Her phone vibrated.
Renee: The plan is active. Don't let him know.
Seconds later another message arrived.
Financial Crime Unit has been notified. Stay where there are cameras.
Claire smiled for the first time all day.
She wasn't the one walking into a trap.
Adrian returned moments later, wearing the same reassuring expression.
"Ready?"
She nodded.
When they entered the executive lobby, every conversation stopped.
The company's general counsel stood near the reception desk with two investigators and three uniformed officers.
"Ms. Bennett," one investigator said, "we're glad you're awake."
Adrian froze.
"There seems to be a problem with several documents submitted in your name this afternoon."
Claire looked at her husband.
"A problem?"
The investigator held up a folder.
"Someone attempted to authorize the transfer of controlling shares using an emergency incapacity declaration."
Silence settled over the lobby.
Claire slowly turned toward Adrian.
"I never signed anything."
One of the officers stepped forward.
"Mr. Bennett, we'd like to ask you a few questions."
For the first time since Claire had opened her eyes in the medical room, Adrian looked genuinely afraid.
And Claire realized the game had changed.
It had never been about surviving.
It was about proving who had tried to destroy her.
